why does windows explorer expand a directory when I (single) click on it?

In the standard explorer view, when I single click on a directory
in the left pane, the directory is expanded to show subdirectories.

This seems unnecessary (or even a bug) since there is the + or
- sign to the left of the directory name to expand or collapse
the node of the directory tree, and the contents of the folder are
displyed in the right hand frame anyway when I click on it in
the left frame.

The setting under options to open only with double click seems
to apply only to the right frame.

Does anyone have a solution or an explaination?
Thanks, David

Start Windows Explorer. Click on Tools then Folder Options. If you have
Single-click to open..... checked, change it to Double-click to open an
item. This should fix your problem.

In addition to the setting that LV referenced, there is another one that
you may want to check:

Folder Options> View: Remove check mark next to "display simple folder view
in Explorer's Folders list." If this setting is enabled, clicking on a
folder automatically expands the selection to display subfolders.

Thanks, but that doesn't help.
As I said in my post, this setting only applies to the right hand
frame in the explorer.

That's it, thanks!

Thanks Sharon, Next time, I'll read the entire message and put on my
thinking cap before I respond.
