Why does typing jump up several lines?

I am editing a long document, and when I am typing in new information, in the
middle of a word, the typing jumps up to another line in the document. I
have also experienced a total loss of information. This problem is quite
frustrating.

Laptop? This is usually an indication of an over-sensitive touch pad.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I've tried getting a new keyboard (didn't
help) and a new mouse (also didn't help).

And no, Graham, it isn't a laptop. I just have to watch my screen as I type,
because my cursor will randomly jump up to a new spot. If I happen to have my
shift key depressed at the moment, it will select everything between the two
points, and the next keystroke will delete it all. Ctrl-Z has become my best
friend.

Do you have voice recognition software? Try turning off the microphone.

You got my hopes up, but our IT department assures me that I don't have voice
recognition software or a microphone. I was really hoping you had found the
answer. Bummer deal.

Hardware issues: Mouse, mouse drivers, mouse connector, mouse software, etc.
