In a new project I import two wmv screen-capture clips made with Media
Encoder, each is 270K. I drag both onto the timeline, add a simple title,
fade-in and fade-out for each clip, no audio, music. I save the movie using
the "Best Quality" setting.

The original 270 k clips are full-size renderings of excellent quality. The
Movie Maker output wmv is 18 meg, half the size or the originals and of
poorer video quality. What am I doing wrong here? All I really need to do
is tring these two wmv screen captures together into one clip - I can do
without the titels and fade.

You are not doing anything wrong. The original clips are encode dwith
different codec. The "screen codec" is highly optimized for capturing
consecutive screenshots... The movie yousave from Movie Maker are saved
being encoded with one of the normal movie codec which doesnt know anyhting
about the screenshots so it encodes in a more general manner. Hence the size
difference.

For more info on the different codecs provided by Windows Media 9:

Thanks, Rehan. That explains a lot.

Do you know, are there any free tools which can be used to combine these
"screen codec" clips into a single file which also uses the screen codec?

Windows Media Encoder that you used to capture originally should be able to
combine them.
