Why does site time out on my machine?

Brett

I frequently get time out errors or server not found when visiting
statravel.com. I can usually do two searches and then get thrown out with a
server not found message. I've tried it in three different browsers from my
computer with the same results. After I get thrown out, I can't even visit
the home page, usually for about 15 minutes or so.

I go to another computer at that moment and can access the site fine. I can
do as many searches as I like without ever being thrown out. Any idea what
is causing this only from my computer?

Thanks,
Brett

Hi Brett :-)

The problem is probably due to some kind of scumware on your system. Try
the following and see if it helps. Even if you have already run some
programs, run them again according to the instructions in the information
below to thoroughly clean you system. Some variants of malware can
replicate itself and return repeatedly if not cleaned properly. It is best
to read through all the information before you start to know before hand
what you need to do and how. Follow all instructions to letter as much as
possible.

WARNING>>>> Backup all documents and files before removing any spyware!!

First., download and install BHODemon from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
Your problem may be caused by a bad BHO.

If this does not resolve the problem, the do the following:

What you can do about spyware and other unwanted software
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/spywarewhat.mspx
Most importantly, be sure to run CWShredder here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.
About Buster:

Then visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:
On-Line Check

and

Basically, throw everything here at your "infection".

Also download and install HiJackThis -

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any
necessary steps to clean your system.

or ignored.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also….. From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)
or Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

Hope this helps :-)

I'm keep a spyware prog in memory and did run the BHO prog. Those didn't
help. The site still goes to server not found often. It's only a problem
with that one site though.

Thanks,
Brett

Hi Brett :-)

Please post the site where this is happening and I'll see if I get the same
results on this end. I have Win XP Pro with SP2. I also have W2K and ME,
so I can test from there too.

Also, try the following and see if it helps:

Cannot browse certain websites
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10082

or..

Go to the following and open with Notepad,
C:\WINDOWS\hosts (the one with no extension (not the .SAM one)
then delete any listing reference for the site you are trying to open.
Then Save and close.

Also..... try adding the site to your Trusted Zone.

It's the statravel.com site for the US. I've been searching the site within
the past few hours and haven't had any problems. It would have died by now.
Maybe the BHO I disabled did the trick. Will keep trying.

Also checking the dslreports.com site you sent.

Thanks,
Brett

Spoke to soon. It just happened again.

Hi Brett :-)

Did you try adding the site to your Trusted Zone? Also, check your HOSTS
file and see if that site is listed there. If so, delete it.

This file is found here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
NOTE: there is no extension to the file (not Hosts.SAM) and you can
open/edit it with
Notepad.

Whatever site you are trying to reach, there may be an entry in the HOSTS
file similar to: 127.0.0.1 www.yourwebsite.com
If so, just delete the entire line.

How to Edit HOST File:
http://www.lithiumdata.com/QandA/hosts.htm

Also...if you have SpyBot, check the Hosts file there to see if that site is
listed. If so, tell it to ignore it or delete it.

If you have SpywareBlaster, check the lists there and make sure the site is
not there. If so, delete it.

Check your AV and firewall to make sure it is not being blocked there.

and....

Courtesy of Don Varnau:

A couple of easy basic steps:
1. A complete shutdown for about 5 minutes- computer, modem, router,
everything.
2. Clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content.) It's often recommended that the TIF
folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)
3. Check your Cookies folder- delete any cookies from that site.
4. Try opening a Cmd window (or from Start> Run) enter
ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between the g and /
Then restart.

The next time the problem occurs, run a tracert to the site in question to
see if you're experiencing a routing problem external to your system.

To do this... go to start>run> type the letters CMD
Hit enter.
In the DOS window that appears type:

tracert www.statravel.com

Paste the results of the tracert as a reply to this message.

You may simply have an overfull/corrupt cache. Create a new one as per the
instructions at the URL below:

Thank you for the update. :-)

Here's the trace right after I experienced the problem. I then did a
refresh on the page and it opened ok. Very random.
