Why does Outlook (2003) sort by first name not last name?

Why did Outlook 2003 change from listing names in the address book by first
name? That makes no sense to someone who has a a zillion Bobs, Bills, etc.
listed. The previous version of Outlook I had used listed them correctly (as
selected in the Properties menu for the contact).

This is just another example of Microsoft "experts" screwing things up when
everything was fine. No wonder Microsoft has gotten a bad reputation for
putting out bad software or software that is either not user friendly or
overcomplicated.

Suggestion to Microsoft: Be reasonable and provide the option to list them
either way in the Address book.

That option is already there and discussed in these forums several times a day. You'll find it in the settings for the Outlook Address Book. Choose Tools | E-mail Accounts | View or change existing directories etc. Select the Outlook Address Book and click Change.

Went to tools-e-mail accounts-view- outlook address book-change. It did not
cahnge a thing when I selected Last name/First name sort.

Then look at the actual data. As the dialog where you made the change indicates, that choice of sort uses the value in the File As field. Check what you have stored for File As for those items.

There is no Last/First sort option. Only "First/Last" and "File As..."
That leaves two possibilities:
1. Your Files As.. fields are not in Last/First order
2. You forgot to restart Outlook.
