Why does my laptop take so long to boot?

Normally I leave the laptop in hibernation mode when it's not in use, but
occasionally have to do a complete shutdown and reboot, like when I get a
windows update. It takes as much as 15 minutes to go through all the steps it
feels it needs to before I can get on with some more work. If I try to launch
an application before it is ready nothing happens, I just have to wait for it
to finish what it's doing.

Customer support at the manufacturer website would be the place to go.
Especially since the manufacturer will have record of the model and
configuration and you've told us nothing about your system.

Turn OFF auto anti-virus scan on bootup.
Turnoff anti-spam scan on bootup. (Especially Defender)
Disable any unused network cards.
Disable all your applications from auto start that aren't needed
immediately. (Printers, printer monitors, scanners, kodak software etc, java
updates, MSN messenger, AIM messenger, etc etc you get the idea!!!
Put more memory in laptop. HM you got? Like Phil said!!! You don't give much
info. If it's an old Celeron 433 with 32 megs of RAM running XP Pro
................ get it?
