Why Does My IE Open So Slowly?

This isn't a critical issue, just one of those minor annoyances. I have a
fairly peppy machine that I am compulsive about keeping free of spyware,
viruses and unnecessary files. I do regular scans several times per week and
throw out the trash. It's a P4 3.2 with 1,512 mB of ddr ram and over 200
gigs of free HD space. The OS is XP Media Center. When I try to open OE, it
takes 10 to 20 seconds before anything happens. Like I said, not a life and
death issue, but compared to my office computer, it's excruciatingly slow.
The office IBM Thinkcenter with it's 2.8 P4 and 504 mB of ram running XP pro
opens IE instantly. What might be causing this difference? .....TIA

I'm sorry....typo. I meant Internet Explorer.

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

I have Adaware SE Pro, Spybot and CWShredder. According to each the system
is free from adware/spyware. My NAS (I know it's a hog) regularly scans
clean. I'm leaning towards getting used to Firefox as it responds instantly.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

NAS? Did you mean NAV or NIS by chance? See if disabling whatever it is
makes any difference.

If you have service pack 2 installed on Windows XP, it adds options for
internet browsing & email to "Set Program Access and Defaults" You access
this from Start menu on the taskbar or from All Programs. Click on "Set
Program Access and Defaults, then click on customize, then change to internet
explorer & see if that works better. I did it and seems to have fixed my
problem. If it doesn't work for you, you can just change it back. Hope this
helps.
