Why does installation hang on "creating restore point"?I

In the last few weeks, I've tried installing a couple of Microsoft
Windows XP Home upgrades.

One was the current pre-release of SP2, and the other, just today, was
from the Microsoft Security Update CD dated February 2004. The only
thing on the disc that I hadn't already installed was the "Update
Rollup for Windows XP"

(I already had SP1, Media Player 9 and Direct X 9.)

In both cases above (SP2 and the Update Rollup) installation started,
and then hung on "creating restore point."

Any ideas about how to get around this?

I'm willing to wait for the real SP2, that's no problem, but I'm
worried about the hangup on "creating restore point." How do I get
around that problem??

Thanks,
Alan Moorman

Hi Alan,

Stop and restart System Restore, as you likely have a corrupt point, and
purging them often helps (yes, this means that all current points will be
removed). Start/run services.msc, scroll down to the SR service and
double-click it. "Stop" the service, then restart it after deleting the
contents of the "System Volume Information" folder on each drive (this is a
hidden system folder, so you may need to change folder options to see it).

System restore is a useless piece of programing in XP that becomes unusable at the drop of a hat. Restore points become corrupt or deleted by many many programs. Ones like defrag or disk cleanup or scans and on and on. Anyone relying on this program to help them in any way are simply playing russian roulette. The only backup program that you can rely on in XP and the one you should be using is NT Backup. Turn off the useless system restore and save space and CPU time. SP2 RC2 is known for stopping part way through the install procedure and the beta people know about it but are way too busy to fix something so minor. To work around this simply do the complete download of the SP2 RC2 for multiple installs and then once you have downloade it to your machine double click to open the file and install from there. The NT Backup is found on your XP Home Edition disk in the valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder. }:~)

Thanks Rick! That solved the problem.

I've not only installed the one remaining item from the CD, but also
SP2 (candidate 2).
