why does filter by form field not show values

I'm a novice and I can't figure this out! I can design a table and enter data
in manually and everything is good. I can even append several records from
another table and everything is good. I can do a filter by form on the table
and pull a drop down list on any of the fields and the data from my table is
visible. However when I append the table with all of the data that I need,
the fields show "Is Null" and "Is Not Null" when I filter by form and pull
down a list on any of the fields. Can someone tell me why and how to prevent
it?
