Why does calendar entry on day view not match time span

In 2003 you could look at the day and tell where there were open spaces in
your schedule, but the day view in 2007 seems to reduce the entries to a
single line rather than covering the time span. Is there some way to get the
same format as in 2003. That seems like a rather important feature. I hope it
isn't gone.
 
The Day & Week view here in OL2007 seem to have the appointment covering its
timespan. The month view shows things as a single line with no time
coverage. What interval are you using in the day views (out of curiosity).
 
Had tried 15 min & 30 min intervals, but discovered the problem. The view had
both start and end set to "start". I don't think I made that change, but
maybe something I installed did.
