When I read a message, leave it in the inbox without responding to it or
deleting it, and then close outlook, the message has disappeared from the
inbox when outlook is reopened. I can't find it in the deleted file or any
other folder. Why does this happen?

My offhand guess is: because of your View settings.

Go to menu: View-->Current View--> and you will see a list of options for
organizing the current view. If it is set to 'Unread Messages', then it
might work as you describe. You probably want to set it to 'Messages'.

If this is not the problem, I'd guess there is some kind of Custom View
setting or Filtering rule going on which is moving, hiding, or deleting your
messages.

Check this and report back if it doesn't solve the problem.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks!!! This answers the question. I am not sure how the "unread" setting
was made, but in any event you resolved my problem. This has been making me
nuts and I couldn't find the solution.
