Why do my keyboard and mouse stop responding?

My pc has started to freeze intermittently. I don't get any error messages,
the keyboard & mouse just stop responding. I haven't noticed any pattern at
all to it, and it doesn't seem to matter which application I am running.

I have scanned my system with fully updated versions of Macafee, Spybot,
Ad-Aware, and The Cleaner. Spybot and Ad-Aware came up with some stuff, but
nothing major.

System is:-

Win Xp Pro Sp1
2600XP
1gb ddr400
radeon 9600XT
200gb hd space

Any ideas?

Understood.
It's simply that intermittent problems such as this one that never happen at
the same time etc.. are usually due to 2 different possibilities.
1- Overheating inside the case IE the CPU gets hot and locks up
2- Bad memory chip in which case with any luck you have more than one that
do not have to be installed in pairs in which case the troubleshooting
technique is fairly obvious (Remove 1 see if problem goes away)

It looks like I'll have to try that. My memory is only fairly new, and is
branded (vdata), so I hoped that maybe it was something a patch or registry
tweak would fix. Ah well.

Does the event viewer show any error records? These could indicate where to
look to solve the problem.

Richard.

I did this, and there are quite a lot of errors over the last few weeks,
which say the source of the error is my cdrom. It says the device has a bad
block. I wonder if this is part of the problem? Unfortunately I can't
remember the times and dates when my pc has froze, so I'll have to check the
event viewer next time it does it.

, I've got 8 case fans inside my pc

Too many fans can be counter-productive. Instead of alleviating heat
buildup, they can trap it and that in turn, as you know, can cause
problems.

What is the temp on the CPU, even it has a fan, does not mean it is seated
proper. Just something to check.
