Why do my Design Templates disappear in the Slide Design Screen?

When I go to create a new Powerpoint presentation, my Design Templates are
missing - what causes this?
 
I think I have a similar question.
I want the layout template to be displayed while I lay out the text/data on
the slide.

What control lets this happen. I can't find it

Thanks for the tip. But what really fixed my problem was installing the
latest set of ATI Radon Drivers. (I have the 9600 card)

I thought my info might be helpful to others.
