Why do my B&W prints have a blue tint to them?

Epson R220. When I print out certain types of images, especially B&W photos
they appear to have a blueish tint to them instead of all greys.

I believe it's because your printer mixes colours to simulate black. Try
checking the "greyscale" option in your printer setup window if it has one.

if you use photoshop or another good editor "DESATURATE" the photo.
that should take care of most of the color cast.

if you are not using epson ink that may not help
 
Neutral B&W photos are notoriously difficult to obtain on inkjet printers.
Typically, differing ranges of gray levels will vary in neutrality and tint.

Hardware and software RIPs are a solution, but cost much more than the
printer.

Certain printers are better than others, not that that is going to help you
with your R220.

Real-world low-bux solution is to experiment with various printer settings
and see if you can heuristically move towards less tintage.

Let me take a stab at this; even though I'm a newcomer to inkjet
printers, I know a lot about photography, so I'll answer from that
perspective -- sort of.

The solution in my head is relative to the HP drivers for my two inkjet
printers, and may be in many more "native" Windows drivers.

Just look for the color switch in the driver and kill the color for your
BW photos. This should leave you with only the output from the black
cartridge. That's how I see it. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

I once had this problem with a color laser printer. It turned out that
the magenta toner wasn't working correctly. I replaced it and
everything was fine.
