why do IE open new windows minimized?

Did you run some sort of "cleaning" program that may have removed some
registry streams??

IE remembers the last window that was opened.

This will have to be redone occasionally.

Open *one* instance of IE | Use the cursor (not the
maximize button) to drag the window to the desired
size | Click the Close [X] while holding down the
Ctrl key.
-----

When all else fails, paste the line below into Start | Run

javascript:window.open(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight)

Note: then make sure the above window is the last one closed.

----

Or maybe you're using a shortcut to open IE and Minimized is selected under
Run.

Right click the shortcut | Properties | Shortcut tab |
Under Run, change to Normal Window or Maximized |
Apply | OK

In the rare instance that I had to "redo" mine, it was always a result of
having 'cleaned' a particular registry stream and wiping those settings.
IIRC, I have never had to hold the Ctrl key while closing the resized window
for the setting to 'stick'.....is this supposed to be a requirement, Wes??

I don't now why this problem occurs but when it does I now know how to solve
it. Thanks very much.

I don't know why it occurs either, nor do I care. I know how to fix it and
that's good enough for me.

Keep having fun. :-)

Ctrl + Close [X] saves folder settings. Sometimes the settings are saved
anyway, but Ctrl + Close is added insurance.

This is the registry key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Window_Placement REG_BINARY

Sometimes Window_Placement becomes currupt and deleting it will help.

Kelly's Correct IE Window Placement fix, 60. Right hand side
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
deletes the Value Name Window_Placement.

A new key is created with whatever values of the last closed IE window.

I don't know if Ctrl + Close is related to this or not...

MS mentions [[press and hold down the CTRL key and then quit Windows
Explorer by clicking Close in the upper-right corner of the screen.]]
here...
[[You must perform these steps exactly as they are listed. For example, do
not quit Windows Explorer by clicking Exit on the File menu. ]]

Ctrl + Close handlers have nothing to do with it and have nothing to do with the control key either. It is a similar function to Ctrl + C and Ctrl + Break but Ctrl + Close is just a system is about to shutdown message and is from Windows rather than from the user.

It makes no difference if control is held or not. It writes the value once or twice on Windows opening and once on closing. If a window comes from another window it is written twice (presumbably once from the original window and once for the new).
