Hi--

I built a system some months ago and have been getting ghost images on
my screen: Where there is a distinct vertical line that is supposed to
be there, and a light-shaded region to the right that is also supposed
to be there, I see to the right of the line an evenly-spaced fading
sequence of indistinct "ghost images" of the vertical line.

Is there something like a shielding or interference or impedance problem?

MSI/Nvidia FX5200 AGP card
Viewsonic 17PS-2 17" Monitor (ca. 1996, but seems fine otherwise)
Redhat Linux 8.0
XFree86, Gnome desktop
Nvidia accelerated video driver

Thanks.

First thing to check would be the monitor cable.

Well, depends on your financial situation, I suppose. First thing would be
to move it around and make sure that other shite is not bleeding into your
signal. Second thing would be to replace it.

also, though it may sound silly, check that it is plugged in all the way. I
had a similar problem once... <g>

try running at a reduced refresh rate, it could be RF interference and this
sometimes helps. also check your cable connections....

Howdy!

Do you have an extension cable on this monitor? If not, I'd bet the
CRT is getting old.

You can try a lower refresh rate and a lower resolution if there's
no extension cable.

OTOH, if there IS an extension cable - take it off. NOW.

And watch all those nasty ghosts disappear! <B-)

Sorry, I should have said that I'm not using an extension cable. I
learned about that mistake quite a few years ago ...

I've been at 75.0 Hz vertical, 1280x1024, 80 KHz horizontal. The
monitor is capable of a lot more, but I don't like the small print ...
