Why do blank lines of HTML appear in Front Page?

When building pages in Front Page, sometimes I discover long strings (several
thounsands of lines) of blank lines in the HTML code view. A couple of times
this has made the page file so large it corrupts the page and makes it
inaccessible. I have done nothing in particular that I know of to insert
these lines. Why does this occur and how do I prevent it?

In code view, right click the page and select "Reformat HTML."
