WHERE DO I START

I BOUGHT MY PC 3 MONTHS AGO. MOVIE MAKER, WHICH CAME INSTALLED, CRASHES AT LEAST THREE TIMES AN HOUR. ALL DIFFERENT SITUATIONS, ALL DIFFERENT COMMANDS, DOESN'T MATTER. IT LOCKS UP, AND I HAVE TO CTRL+ALT+DELETE. THE MICROSOFT 'SUPPORT' SITE OFFERS A DROP DOWN LIST OF PRODUCTS, BUT MOVIE MAKER ISN'T LISTED. BECAUSE IT CAME WITH MY PC, I'M DIRECTED TO CONTACT DELL. DELL EVENTUALLY FORWARDS MY CALL TO A VOICE MAIL MENU DESCRIBING HOW I CAN PURCHASE A SUPPORT PLAN. I DON'T WANT TO PURCHASE A SUPPORT PLAN. I ALREADY SPENT $2000 ON THIS PIECE OF CRAP. BUT, BECAUSE I DIDN'T TEST ALL MY SOFTWARE IN THE FIRST 30 DAYS, I CAN'T GET HELP FROM DELL. MICROSOFT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS I CAN USE. WHEN I TRY TO SUBMIT FEEDBACK ABOUT THE USELESSNESS OF THEIR 'SUPPORT' WEBSITE, I'M TOLD THAT THIS SERVICE IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE. SO I HAVE NO MEANS OF CONTACTING THEM AT ALL. WHEN MOVIE MAKER CRASHES, A REPORT IS GENERATED AND SENT (APPARENTLY). I HAVE SENT AT LEAST FIFTY OF THESE CRASH REPORTS. WHERE DO THEY GO? DO THEY MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL? WHY DID THEY BOTHER TO MAKE THIS PRODUCT

I guess you start at the Problem Solving > Acceleration and Codecs page of
my website. It resolves or works around most of the MM2 crashes.

Hi There,

It sounds as though you have a codec problem. I have written a program
that takes care of this for you. Its called "Rename Codecs" It removes the
need to read long wordy explanations of what might or might not be the
actual codec that is causing your problem. It can be downloaded from my
site. Read the text on the right of the download icon before you proceed.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Thanks for your reply. I've downloaded 'Rename Codecs' but I seem to be doing something wrong when I try to use it. I assume the procedure is to find the codecs and then rename them, but each time I try, I get a dialog box that says "STOP! Do not use this." I appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi there,

Yes, that's exactly right...its my final warning that no procedure is
100% safe and its your last chance to withdraw. I think I will make it less
spectacular on the next release.

Hello again,

Because I have had several questions the same as yours today and now that
so many people have used it with out a single problem I am feeling very
confident about the programs robustness in this area. So, I have uploaded
the latest version of the program. I have not had chance to complete the
Codec Registration options (I have been out and about all day) So those
options are presently disabled. The rest of the program is fully functional
and it now has a much less strident warning.....in fact its no longer a
warning as such.....it simply requests confirmation that you actually do
want it to proceed to rename your codec's.

Codec Registration/De-registration will come on line real soon together
with a number of other features that will eliminate duplicated codec's
spread around a system. I have had quite a few emails about that. Its
actually very easy to do, its finding the time in my hectic (Retired) life
to do it that is the main problem...slowly though the program is moving
away from being a totally trivial affair into a utility good for a range of
Codec problems suitable for all types of computer user from total novice
(The Home Key is NOT the one on your key ring) to Expert (English
definition = Ex as in has been, Spert as in drip under pressure)

I had similar problems that disappeared after doing the
following:

(1) R-click the DeskTop
(2) Select Properties
(3) L-click Settings
(4) L-click Advanced
(5) L-click Troubleshoot
(6) Reposition the "HW Acceleration" pointer to the third
from the left index -- normally it's set to the sixth
(right-most) index
(7) Then just "OK" your way back to the DeskTop

NOTE: while this setting did eliminate my MM2 lockups, it
also caused some problems with a couple of my daughter's
games... so we just toggle the setting depending on what
we're doing.

Good Luck

Harry

I can't seem to find that file on my computer. Do I try the acceleration solution? I only seem to be crashing when I'm fooling around with music files.

I can't seem to find the divxaf file on my computer. Should I try the accelerator solutions? I only seem to crash when I'm fooling around with audio files.

Hello there,

If you try the Rename Codecs program on my site you will not have to
worry where the DivX program is. Check out the FAQ on how it works as well.

John,
I tried the RC program, but no codecs showed up! Does that mean I have no conflicts, or am I doing something wrong.

Rob

John,
I tried your rc program and no codecs showed up. Does that mean there is no conflict or am I doing something wrong?

John,
Sorry for all the emails. The system said they couldn't be delivered. I figured out the program, but several of the codecs couldn't be renamed because they are in i386. What does that mean?

Thanks again,
Rob

Hello there,

Its nice to have a normal conversation in here....

I tried the RC program, but no codecs showed up! Does that mean I have no
conflicts, or am I doing something wrong.

That indicates a problem...there is at least one codec that MUST turn up
and then the program will refuse to rename it because of where it is.....So
I'm not sure what has happened. Can you run it again and make a not of the
drive it is scanning and exactly what you do and what the program does as a
result. I might then be able to help out.

Hello there,

Sorry for all the emails. The system said they couldn't be delivered. I
figured out the program, but several of the Codecs couldn't be renamed
because they are in i386. What does that mean?

I have not had any emails from you as far as I am aware....mind you I have
not yet answered all that I have received.

Yes, that's exactly right.....my program searches everywhere on the drive.
By removing a load of checks and bypassing other restrictions, the program
is able to do a very fast search. Every codec that is known to cause
problems (in any way at all) is included in the search result. But, some of
those codec's will be replaced by XP the moment they disappear (because
they no longer have the same name) So, the program finds all and reports
when it is a bad idea to rename, that's all done by design.

For any further info you could read the FAQ on my website.
