today when I started my PC it stopped right after checking my RAM.
Just sat there

I restarted and it is running now.
what could cause this?

Which one of the 1000 possibilities would you like us to guess at?

No idea, but you could experiment by unplugging components (keyboard, for
instance) and rebooting and seeing if this replicates the problem. You won't
know whether it's the beginning of something serious until you've rebooted a
few dozen times.

Possibly on some machines, if the internal battery needs replacing that
could cause such a pause during the startup.

As the other state, you did not provide enough info but this tends to
lead to a problem with your PC. The POST is testing the PC's
components and you need to have the motherboard, video card, power
supply and other parts checked out.

Sorry for the lack of details.
I was freaking out. No crashes since that one.

So just before the crash
I had just upgraded my power supply last weekend from a JustPC
706ATXBX 550W ATAPS 550W (that came with my crappy case).
To a Enermax Liberty 500W modular.

My old PS was not shutting off completely (for a few months a light on
my DVD and the Digital temp display in the case remained on after I
shut down).
I was turned onto the Enermax when I asked about OCing on the Google
ASUS usergroup.

It was $55 after rebate, and to me seemed a far superior PS in every
respect to the JustPC.
Also last month I upgraded my RAM to 4GB (2X2G) DDR2 800 PC2 6400XMS2
DHX

The rest
ASUS P5WD2E-PEMIUM
INTEL D-805
2 PC. WD SEI6WD2500KS
LITE-ON 16XDVD-R SHW160P65-04
ZALMAN CNPS5900AT
FREETECH PX6200TD128M GEFORCE6200 PCI-x

I haven't done any OC'ing yet.

thanks for the feedback

That information should have been included in the error message
presented when the POST was interrupted. What did it say?

Hi
There was no error message.
I started
The American Megatrends header appeared, then the steps proceeded up
to where it listed the RAM then it froze.
All this info takes less than a page.

I shut it off and turned it back on and it started normally.
And has every time since.
About six starts.

Locate, download and create test "media" for MemTest +86 (???)

Looks like you may have problems with the RAM.

I think i have that memtest here somewhere, and I willl try it. BTW It
took three tries to boot this morning: POST stopped at the same point
during the RAM test.
I still have my old RAM, I suppose I can use that as a fallback
what's runescape and why is this post on this thread?
thanks for the suggestion<>

Runescape is a video game. Just ignore this reply since it appears to
have been placed here by error.

ok
corsair tech support says i have to run this RAM test a few times with
one stick installed in the slot closest to the cpu then with the other
stick installed.
if one RAM fails they will replace the pair, if both RAM fail then he
says it is probably some other prob with the PC causing the boot to
stop.

i have placed the file named memtest86+-2.01.iso on a CD
(this file is too large to fit on a floppy),

but now cannot figure out why it won't boot.
I changed the boot priority so the CD drive is first, the hdd is
second and the floppy is third.
(it had been floppy first, then hdd then cd.)

there are [brackets] around the CD drive in the BIOS setup, which the
bios says means the drive is not active but
The DVD-R drive works because I can read off it and was able to copy
the file to the CD, but when I start the PC with the CD in the drive
POST halts at the same place as when it is hanging
(right at the RAM line).

I have power cable and a SATA cable going to it.
there is no place for an IDE cable
it is a lite-on 16XDVD-R SHW160P65-04
there is a small male connector but i do not know what that's for.

please disregard my last post.
I was finally able to create the boot CD and get memtest to run.
now it's just a matter of running the tests on each RAM.

Corsair said to install the ram one stick at a time in the slot
closest to the cpu., and run the test for two passes.
I did and no errors were reported.
I noticed my settings for the RAM are 267mhz/4-4-4-12.
