Why did it get so slow?

Since I downloaded Windows SP1, each time I try to open
Word or Excel, it takes a long time, almost a minute and
te status bar reads "requesting virus scan..". Same thing
happens when you try to open up any file after you opened
Word!
This never happened before. normally, these programs and
files will open in a snap! Does this have anything to do
with SP1 or does anyone know what might be causing this.
thank you
Gabe

After updating to the January 7th or 8th virus definitions, your computer slows
down and Microsoft Word and Excel will not start

Thanks for your reply. My computer is not slow. Except
for Word and Excel everything else works fine. Only these
two programs, and only after I installed SP1. I also ran
spywareinfo program which detected couple of spyware
porgams and removed them. the problem is still there! any
ideas!
Thanks

Much spyware is intentionally designed to be difficult if not impossible to
completely remove without damaging your system. You cannot, therefore,
assume that all files and registry entries created by the spyware have been
eliminated.

Thanks Tom. In the meantime, any suggestions as to how to
overcome this problem(s)? Thanks Gabe

Gabe,
I runnnig XP with 3MHz and 1G of RAM and it takes 1
minute for Windows to open. Same thing with the "running
virus scan". Hope someone responds with a solution. If
you figure it out, pls post.

Thanks Carey!
I just wanted to tell you that your link fixed my
problem. I had a user that would open excel, the go file
open, then try to browse to her files. It would take
about a minute to finally go somewhere. I did the fix
and it worked. Your post in this news group fixed a
terrible obscure problem that I had. Thanks so much!
