All of my contacts are in the "contacts" folder.

I have checked, deleted and reinstalled the address book in the tools email
accounts add address book menu and it looks OK.

I looked to see that the show contacts check box is checked in the
properties for the contacts folder and it is.

I still don't see any contacts in the address book and cannot address emails
because of this problem.

Provide your Outlook version.
Provide more detail on what you did to repair the address book view and
state whether it ever worked for you. If it did, what broke it?
What Folders appear in the "Show names from" dropdown in the address book
view.
Verify that your Contacts have valid, resolved electronic addresses.

Outlook 2002 (10.6515.6735) SP3

I don't know what happened to the contacts folder to cause this

Outkook Addressbook
Contacts
Showes up but the names in the large area of the dialog is blank

how do I Verify that the Contacts have valid, resolved electronic addresses

So you are saying that the address book view did work as expected, then all
of a sudden just stopped for no reason?
Examine a Contact Record. Verify that there is an electronic address in
there that is underlined. If there is, check your address book again and see
if that Contact then appears.
If it does not, then make sure you remove the Outlook address book Service
completely from this profile. Restart Outlook. Add it back and enable your
Contacts Folder. Restart Outlook again.
