Why can't PowerPoint 2007 open previous versions of Powerpoint?

I'm trying to open previous versions of PowerPoint ppt files and PowerPoint
2007 will not open them. HELP!

What type of error message are you receiving?

Regularly PowerPoint 2007 can open a 2003 file.
If you have to view it. You can download a PowerPoint viewer.Or convert it
to Flash.
