Colleague and I are trying to get her Outlook 97 to be able to work with my
Outlook 2003 for setting up meetings. When either of us send an invitation,
neither of us get the response bar options ("Accept / Decline / Tentative /
etc.")

HELP!

are you using exchange server? what do you get? Do you have sp1 installed?

Hi Diane -

New job, so new company and therefore, new rules. Just found out that our
org won't install SP1 on our systems because of problems it causes (?), and
our mail accounts are IMAP, not exchange server, based. Any hope to be able
to share calendars if you DON'T have an exchange server email account? Hands
are pretty much tied to go outside of the corporate way of configuring. Ever
heard of calendar sharing, even just with Outlook 2003 (no OL98), with IMAP
accounts?

Much thanks,
gillian

You need to send the invites as RTF - click on the address and choose use
outlook rich text format from the format list when you prepare the invite.
Then it *should* work - although some servers strip the tnef from the
message, in which case it'll never work. I'm not sure how compatible ol97
and 2003 are either - but you should at least see the buttons if the server
doesn't strip it.

If this is all you want to do as far as calendar sharing, task assignment
etc, making sure you use RTF format should be all you need. If you want to
view her calendar, you'll need a 3rd party utility or sync with hotmail or
yahoo calendars - options which probably won't fly in your environment. More
on sharing can be found here: http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm.

Thank you for confirming what was needed. I spoke yesterday with someone at
Dell's Microsoft support desk, as well as someone at MS itself, and both of
them and now your information suggests that in fact 97 and 2003 are not
compatible as far as meeting invitations go. So at least I know what's
needed, and we'll have to upgrade my colleague to 2003 asap so that these
invites will work. I had actually tried the RTF route on a whim before you
mentioned it (nice to know I was on a right track), and it did not work
either. So there you go, mystery solved: what I was trying to do was never
going to work! But thank you for all of your help all the same. Regards,
Gillian.
