why can't I view this website?

Hi,

There's a website I'd like to see. However, IE6 blocks access to part of
it. Here's the details:

1. It's not a passworded website.
2. Not porn, or paysite, or anything like that.
3. No popup blocker on my webbrowser.
4. Norton NIS and NAV permit IE to do it's thing.
5. IE doesn't have content advisor enabled.
6. Other people I know can go to the site and view.

What's wrong with my machine?

Can you suggest any other things to consider???

Any chance this site has a "buy now" option ? The only thing I can think
of at the moment is perhaps the site requires 128 bit encryption (althou
most sites will tell you they need this if you do not have it). Go to your
IE HELP and then ABOUT and on about the second line it will tell you what
you have, its called Cipher Strength.

Also have you gone to Internet tools and removed all your old cookies, files
and history ? There could be something in there that is blocking you.

Other two items, are the friends that can see the entire page also in Canada
? Some sites restrict you depending on where you are. Also what happens, you
say you cannot "see" part of the site. Are you saying its blank, or that if
you try to click on a section of the page (ie About Us...) that your browser
just sits there ? Any error messages ? As a experiment, you might just
turn off Norton and see if that makes any difference.
Hope you get it working !
Tedd

Be default, a firewall, like Norton's, may block Referer. Normally that is
okay and prevents sites from tracking where you came from. However, some
sites use Referer for security. They want to ensure that you navigate to
one of their web pages using their links from their web pages; i.e. to get
to page 2, you must've come from page 1. Many sites also do NOT want some
other site to link into their pages (and pretend those pages are theirs or
try to usurp them). If Referer is blocked, they cannot tell where the hell
you came from.

In Norton's, you define a rule for that domain where you do NOT block
Referer. For NIS2003, you add the domain rule under Web Content in the
options. In prior versions, there was an option to block Referer. Now in
NIS 2003, it looks like you only get the option to block info from your
browser (which includes Referer).

Done that. Same results at that site.

I can go to the site and see the entry page. Can go to all other pages and
see all links for that site. Except for one page. That page comes up and
just shows 5-6 links to other pages. All links work, except one link. When
you click, it says.."Loading" and then nothing happens. All other links on
that page and any other work fine. All the links are to other links within
the site. I've contacted tech support at the site and they say the site is
working normally. Other friends of mine see the site, as well. Even had a
friend who brought over his computer--the site works normally.

What gives, I wonder???

thx.

I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting here? I wonder if you can
give me a bit more info?

Thx.

Repeat: In prior versions, there was an option to block Referer. Now in
NIS 2003, it looks like you only get the option to block info from your
browser (which includes Referer).

That means in NIS 2003 (and probably in NIS 2004) that the option is no
longer called "Block Referer". It is the option for blocking all info from
the browser (which includes Referer).

Open NIS' options, open the Web Content tab panel, pick any site that is
already defined or just pick the global settings (by highlighting the
"(Defaults)" node). Under the Global Settings tab panel, see the very top
option regarding browser information? I didn't think I had to be so
specific as to actually state that it is the "Information about your server"
option.

Click the Add Site button to start a rule to use against whatever domain you
are having a problem with. Although the popup dialog automatically inserts
the "www." prefix, erase that. Just enter the domain. If the problem site
is www.somewhere.com then just enter somewhere.com. That will then cover
every host at that domain, including the www host.

Make sure the newly added domain is highlighted in the tree list. On the
right, uncheck the option box under Global Settings for "Use default
settings". Then check the "Permit" radio box. You have now told NIS to
*not* block information about your browser when you connect to that domain,
and part of the browser information is Referer.

Don't know if you want to be trusting the .exe file yet. Before doing that,
just trying using Windows XP's own repair.

Network Connections (in Control Panel)
Right-click on your connectoid (LAN or dial-up)
Select "Repair" from the context menu.

Another method of resetting the TCP stack to use the default parameters is
to run the following within a DOS shell:

netsh int ip reset

Both of the above are programs included in Windows XP. Fixing Winsock or
TCP/IP isn't going to resolve your problem. You are only having problems
with a single web site and then only with specific pages there. Supposedly
you can browse anywhere else you want, so networking is working just fine on
your computer.

By the way, have you yet cleared your browser's temp file cache (Internet
Options -> General -> Delete Files (and include offline content, too)? It's
possible a cached page won't display correctly, especially if that page (on
the site's server) uses server-side scripting or programs to generate
content that then gets added to that page.

Have you yet deleted your cookies? It is possible the site changed the
order and use of the fields within their cookie and you have an old cookie
for them that they don't know how to read anymore.

I can't find a web page to lead you to this winsockfix... i can only tell
you it worked for me and you can ask WAR17 or RAMESH [MVP] in this news
group about the fix and where to get information on it..... As i said before
this fix works.......This winsock repair fixed all my IE web page display
trouble. All my
pages show and display as they should know.
