Why can't I take the top-level directory of a share offline?

I am trying to share a folder with my wife's computer, i.e. I have a
directory which I defined as being shared.
On her computer I tried to define this folder a "make available
online". However, this option is only available on files and
subfolders, not on the main-folder. There seems to be no way to make
EVERY file and subfolder in that shared folder automatically available
on an other device.

I could work around this, by defining a TWO-LEVEL hierarchy, i.e.:

+ folder defined as being shared <= this one can not be declared
as "available offline"
+ folder to be shared <= declared as "available offline" on the
other system
<here I would then place all documents to be shared>

.... but I consider that a clumsy solution. Why can't I register a
folder that's being shared as being "available offline"?

Is she mapping a drive letter or trying to use the UNC path?

This may not address your question directly, but I despise offline files and
am now using SecondCopy 2000 (www.centered.com) instead. Much much much
nicer - and cheap. They have a 30-day eval. This product is now part of my
standard laptop/remote computer software load....

She (or rather me on her computer...) is trying to use the UNC path.

In the meantime I found another workaround: if she maps my share to a
drive letter, she can define THAT as "available offline" (which I
consider a bit clumsy, but those are the typical MS workarounds - why
can't they provide the same abstraction on ALL levels of a shared
folder?).
