Why can't I see artwork inserted into my slides?

All of a sudden, pictures, clip art, and even slide design features don't
show up on working window of my Powerpoint files. I can see the background
features and shapes, pictures, etc., in the print view or in the "slides"
column on the left hand side of the screen, but not on the window on which I
am working
