Why can't I open Outlook .msg files stored in Windows folders?

I'm using Outlook 2003 and Windows XP. I've done "Save As" from Outlook to
save email messages as Windows .msg files. The Windows file type
associations seem OK, because the .msg files appear in Windows Explorer with
file type = Outlook Item.

When I double-click on a .msg file in Windows Explorer, the focus shifts to
Outlook (the Outlook window opens), but the .msg file does not open. (I've
done this successfully on another computer, so I think the basic technique is
correct.)

I've also tried to drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer into an Outlook mail
folder, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Any idea what's happening? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Do you have Google Desktop installed? Uninstall it and try again. Their
latest version can cause this issue.

Yes, I do. Never thought of that. Thanks.
