During setup on a full install, I can't delete the current
partition (err msg states current partition has files
required for setup)or create a new partition to install
into. all I'm allowed to choose is install over current
partition. I never get a clean install. Thanks-

1) To delete the partition containing the Windows XP files, create a new
one, then install XP, you will need to boot using the Windows XP
installation CD and go through the Installation Process.
2) To create a secondary partition on a hard drive which is partitioned as a
single partition which takes up all free space using tools provided by
Microsoft, you will have to delete that partition, then recreate a new
partition, this time leaving "free, unpartitioned space" on the HD with
which you can later create a second partition. This will destroy all
existing files on the HD.

There is a second way you can create a secondary partition on a HD
partitioned as a single partition taking up all free space: You can use a
third-party tool, such as Partition Magic 7 (or greater) to cut out free,
unpartioned space from the existing partition, with which you will be able
to create a secondary partition. This may leave your existing files on the
HD.

Remember this general principle concerning partitioning:
ALWAYS format partitions AFTER creating them.
