Why can't I copy?

When i want to copy something from a word file to a text file or from a text file to a word file, it simply doesn't work. why? Can somebody help me?
 
Microsoft Word File Format: .doc
Word Pad or Note Pad File Format: .txt

You can use Word to convert and read .txt files, but I don't think you can
use Word Pad to convert and read .doc files. Word can convert a .doc file
to a .txt file, or you can choose to save the document that way, if you
want. Choose to Save As, choose the format under Files of Type.
