Why can't I change the color in selected Excel cells?

As a long time user of Excel, am not able to change a selected cell's color
using my recently aquired excel 2003 version. Nor am I able to change the
color of the font.
The same is true for the drawings.
However when I print the pertinent page the invisible colors print.

If this is a problem with all Excel files with coloured cells, the Windows OS
high contrast setting may be turned on. There is information in the
