Why can't I add a new contact from my email address book?

Using Outlook 2003. I used to be able to add a new contact from the email
screen by clicking on the address book icon.

Now it is telling me I cannot add from there and must go to contacts to add.

Why is this happening and can I fix it so I can add by clicking on the
address book icon?

Thanks.

what is the exact error message? (you may be able to click in it and press
Ctrl+C to copy, then paste in the reply)

In no version of Outlook should you add contacts from the address book view.
That is not what it's for.
Always use the Contacts Folder for adding or editing Contact data.

It says "A new entry could not be added. Please use the contacts module to
create this entry". This comes after the following steps:
1) Clicked on Address Book icon on the toolbar in email
2) Clicked on File, New Entry
3) Clicked on New Contact, OK

I used to be able to do this! And, when I click on the Address Book icon,
there is a File menu, with New Entry on it, then a choice of New Contact or
New Distribution List. So I am puzzled by your answer - can you clarify?

The address book in Outlook does not exist. It is merely a view of some of
the data that resides in your Contacts Folder. That view was never intended
for data entry or editing. That should only be done in the Contacts Folder
itself. Data entered in the address book view might get lost or placed in a
folder other than the one you intended.
The sooner you get used to using the Contacts Folder the better. To add an
entry from an email, just R click the address > Add to Contacts...
