Why can I suddenly not open any Word or Excel files?

In the last two days, when try to open Word or Excel files, I clickon open in
the dialogue box and after a time, I get the Not Responding message.

I can open files by searching for them and then opening from the search
results but i can't remember the name of every file I want to open and I'm
worried that something serious is wrong, either with my machine or my copy of
MS Office.

Check out the response to "Can not save files"
I had the same problem and it was due to Security Update for Windows XP
KB908531 which caused the problem on my PC but not my wife's.

I also have this problem. How does one delete the KB908531 Security update?
