Why both /public_html and /www folders?

I have used both FP and FTP to upload to my website.

With FTP, I have uploaded to the /public_html folder and I have assumed that
FP also uploaded to this folder.

Reading the web pages of various webhosts, I have learned there is also a
/www folder which is the same as the /public_html folder.

What is the reason for two folders that supposedly contain the same files?

What would the consequences be if the /www folder was deleted?

Another puzzler: This occurred prior to my learning about /www. In viewing
the files with my FTP software, the subfolders were empty and yet the
website worked fine. I went back a few hours later and the same subfolders
now had the files. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

Do not delete any folders that you did not create, and if you have questions
regarding the folders, you have to ask your host as they are the ones who
set up their servers.
