Myh list of newsgroups has about 20 groups, some in light typeface and
others in bold typeface. I can't see any difference between the 2. What
determines whether a newsgroup is light or bold?

Thanks,

Norm Strong

Bold = group has Unread messages/posts
Light = All read
Red = A watched message has unread message

When a post is in bold typeface it means you haven't read that post. As soon
as you read the post the typeface changes to the 'light' colour you refer
to. If a post is in red with a pair of glasses to the left of it, this means
you have nominated to 'watch' this post. If a flag is visible this means you
have nominated to flag this message (the watch and flag options are
available from the message tab on the main toolbar.

If you don't wish to read 'all' posts then it might be worth enabling the
option to 'mark all messages as read when exiting a newsgroup'. you do this
as follows:

1/ Open Outlook express
2/ Click on the Tools option on the main toolbar
3/ from the drop down menu, Click options
4/ In the options window, click the Read tab
5/ in the read window look for the section marked 'News'
6/ Place a check mark (left click your mouse) in the box next to the option
'mark all messages as read when exiting a newsgroup'
7/ Click OK

Now when you exit a newsgroup all the posts will be marked as read.

In addition.

If you read posts by opening them, double clicking them, they revert to
regular text to show that they have been read.

If you read posts in the preview pane, like I do, they appear in bold text
as if they were unread.

Same for E-mail messages for me, because I also read those in the preview
pane.

I have mine set to mark as read after viewing for two seconds in the Preview
Pane.

Yes. I intended to post to the above newsgroup. I made a mistake. Sorry.

I set mine to 1 second the same as i do with emails in Microsoft Outlook.
What does annoy me though with WM is that on many occasions when i close one
newsgroup and open another WM doesn't always mark the groups as read, so the
group header still remains in bold. The only way i can get round it is to
use the 'catch up' option.

One other 'big' annoyance is the Windows Mail not responding when clicking
from one newsgroup header to another. It literally drives me crazy. In the
beta if i bugged it once i bugged it a dozen times and even in RTM it still
hasn't been sorted.

I have a button on my toolbar to mark all, so when leaving an ng and I
haven't read all the posts I click on that button and all posts are marked
as read, then next to that one is another for next folder clicking that
takes me to the next ng with unread messages.
I find that works very well for me.
Joan
PS: My setting is 2 seconds.
