I teach PPT. Version 2003 was much easier for my students to learn; there
were more design options to choose from and required less skill to use. What
happened to all those templates?

There are many templates and themes available for download on Office Online.
You can go there directly: http://office.microsoft.com or you can get there
from within PPT 2007 using Office Button | New and choose any of the options
listed under Microsoft Office Online -- or you can type key terms in the
search box at the top of the dialog.

Once you've downloaded any of these, they'll show up in the Themes Gallery
on the Design tab in a section labeled "custom."

PowerPoint templates are "pre-made" presentation shells, which
contain other presentation style aspects, including specifications for
the type and size of bullets and fonts, placeholder sizes and
positions, and color schemes. When you apply a template to your
presentation, the Title Master and Slide Master (text slide or
secondary slide) are already available for you to insert text. The
background, typeface, font color and size are already set. That is, if
you change the template for one slide, the background, typeface, font
color and size will be changed correspondingly. It is in .pot format.

Using templates you could create attractive presentations with ease,
there are some free education templates for you.
