Why are names disappearing off my distribution lists?

I have Outlook 2003. I will create a distribution list, and then later when
I open it most of the names have disappeared from it!

You'll need to provide some information.
State how you are creating the list.
State how you are adding names.
State your information store and where your Contacts reside.
State how you are opening the list.

I'm creating the list by going to File-New-Distribution List
I've tried both ways of adding names - Select from Contacts and Add New.
When I use the Add New, I'm cutting and pasting an email address from another
area of Outlook.
I'm opening the lists from the Contacts icon

Information store?
Which names are disappearing, ones that reside in Contacts or ones that
don't?
Does your Outlook Address Book Service work as it should?

Both names that reside in contacts and ones that don't are disappearing. My
Outlook Address Book service seems to work fine.

If I type email addresses in manually, do you think they would stay on the
distribution list?

Most likely you have a corrupt DL. DL's are very fragile and become corrupt
very easily. Create a new one from scratch.
