Why are my formulas not updating?

I read the previous posts, and i have auto calc ticked, running excel 2000,
tried the ctrl, f9, shift, alt trick and nothing. The only thing that works
is if i retype the formula but i dont want to have to do that for each
formula. What I have is a workbook with numerous sheets and the set i just
inserted from a template i created is not updating? Could it be because i
tracked my changes and then switched it off later?
Thanks to all of you who are taking the time to answer all these posts --
always so grateful to read the solutions out there when i get in a jam like
this.

Thanks Nick... yeah i explored that, in the font right? It was actually seen
as general and the funny thing is that in the previous sheets it was okay,
but now in this sheet it became a problem. I changed it to number and that
seemed to help but eventually got the "control, shift, Alt, F9" trick to
trigger the correction. I'd like to know why this happened though to prevent
it from occuring again. Ideas? Or are you not meaning the font?
thanks for your first reply : )

Excel quite often sees imported or copy/pasted from other sources data as
'text' although if you look at format>cells... it show general or a number
format. You can usually tell if you take off all alignment of the numbers as
they align left naturally whereas numbers align right.

What we usually tell users is to copy a 1 in a spare cell. Highlight the
newly imported data and paste special>values+Multiply over the top. This
forces Excel to do a calculation and forces them back to numbers
permanently. You need to avoid any formulae of course.

One other thing I have seen is workbooks getting 'old and sticky', This can
sometimes be corrected by saving the workbook as HTML and the closing,
re-opening, and saving back as an *.xls (round-tripping to HTML)
