hey i just completley installed xp pro and a brand new
linksys ethernet adapter. everything was installed
correctly and everything is working correctly according
to windows. the lights on the back of the nic light up
and windows picks up the Lan. However i can not use the
internet. status says i am sending out tons of packets
but receiving 0. however it shows up taht i am connected
to the internet. i know it is not my cable modem because
when i plug the cable modem directly into my laptop it
works. the cable modem is plugged directly into the
desktop and it is not working. I am not using a router.
the nic card is also working properly i was on the phone
with linksys for like 2 hours, we even pinged the nic
from dos and it showed it was working correctly. someone
please help me. thank you
..

Chris, it really sounds like you have the Nachi virus
(variant of MSBLAST). If I understand your note
correctly, it reflects the exact same problem I had last
weekend. I'd connected ADSL Internet access up to my XP
box. Worked great for 5 minutes, but before I had a
chance to run Windows Update or update my anit-virus sw,
my computer suddenly rebooted itself. When I tried to
connect to the 'Net (and verified in the LAN connections
properties on the PC), I couldn't, yet tons of packets
were being sent by the machine. Sometimes when I rebooted,
I could connect for a few seconds, until the outgoing data
lights started flashing like crazy, and then I knew I
wouldn't be connected long. Once I found and cleaned the
machine, all was well. The following site has the info you
need to get rid of the worm:

Hope this helps!
Derek
