Why all this corruption?

I know it sometimes occurs that files and things become corrupt in Win XP.
What I would like to know is: why does it appen to me on such a regular
basis ?
Quite often a balloon pops up in my system tray telling me "This or that
file has become corrupt or unreadable, please run the chkdsk utility", why
is this happening practically every day ? Why does my user profile become
corrupt practically every week ?
There must be some conflict somewhere, I guess.
A funny detail: I often get major crashes after installing upadates from
Microsoft.
Is this really a coincidence ?
Could anyone with similar experiences or someone familiar with the situation
explain things a bit further please ?
Thank you,
Frankie.

I have one suspicion. When you said that you often get crashes after
installing updates from Microsoft ... I certainly hope you have not been
responding to any of those e-mail messages *purporting* to me from Microsoft
(and possibly opening the attachments). If so, you have probably been
downloading viruses. MS does not send e-mail with attachments, but spammers
have been sending huge numbers of phony messages with attachments that
apparently look remarkably like MS. To download MS, always go directly to
the Microsoft site yourself (not in "response" to e-mail) and look for
updates, especially "critical" updates.

No, Mary, no need to be suspicious.
Those emailed "updates" always go straight in the bin.
Thanks,
Frankie.

You make no mention of which filing system you use - this information might
actually enable someone to help you.

OK Stuart, sorry, didn't realise.
I use Win XP Home, 2 hard drives, one (C:) master one (D:) slave, both using
the NTFS filing system.
Thank you,
Frankie

We could use even MORE info...

General age of system...age of drives...size and free space on
each...location of paging file...how often you defrag and run chkdsk.

Get Vopt and install it...then run most of it and configure it the way
you want it. Especially make sure you run the MFT tuneup.

Good luck...let us know.

Have a nice week...

I would lean heavily towards a hardware problem because you get those
crashes so often. Probably memory, hard drive (System drive) or a heat
related issue. Try a call to your system manufacturer and see if they can
help you. Power supply problems can cause those types of issues also. It is
really hard to find those problems without having components to swap out
and/or test.

What is Vopt and where can I find it ?

Thanks for that, Ed.
Unfortunately, the download link is dead. (The rest of the site works).
Any alternatives or mirrors ?

Thanks,
Frankie.
