Why =A1 remains as =A1 instead of filling cell with value in A1?

My spreadsheet had working assignments using =[celldesignation]. Now if I
change to another cell, instead of seeing the contents of A1, I see =A1, as
though Excel thinks this is supposed to be a text string instead of an
assignment.

My email is (e-mail address removed). I am trying to figure out how to
correct this in the microsoft community.

Hi Caee,

Your worksheet view has a problem.
Go to Tools-->Options-->View
make sure option 'Formulas' is not selected or unchecked.

There is a toggle key for this also.
If you press CTRL and ~ (this is the key on the left of number 1), you can
hide/unhide formula view.

another possibility is the cell is formatted as text. if so, change the cell
format to general then select the cell, hit F2, then enter.
