Because the original message headers have been deleted by your
mail/newsgroup reader.

Because you downloaded the messages after the purge date of the original
message on your news server.

I'm not sure that's correct frank. I check mail many time a day and I have
the same problem. Cropped up only recently.

The reason I gave is valid. Bottom line, you did not download the original
version of the message because it was not available on your server. This is
almost always due to your server not having enough "retention" to maintain
messages as far out as the message that the person chose to replay to. Some
servers have better retention than others.

Keep in mind... some folks search Google and find messages two years old...
then write a reply! LOL! Hence, "Re".

Doesn't have anything to do with how often you check messages.

Oh... also... (don't want to belabor this off-topic thread, so I'll stop
after this :) )...

Some folks configure their news reader to send replies to the newsgroup you
are subscribed to. Although you may not be subscribed to the same group the
original poster is. Viola, it appears in your group with a "Re".

Also, there are sometimes hiccups on news servers.

Also... other reasons.

Just let it go.... :) LOL...

There appears to be an anomaly with the MS server - which has nothing to
do with one's ISP or news feed. Posts here are accessed directly from
the MS server.

This group, and HARDWARE_DEVICES list the wrong UNread message count.
This group in particular does not display all messages, and there are
significant gaps in the time line. Other groups on the same server are
normal. All other private and Usenet servers here display as they should.

Several folks report similar problems - using different news readers.
At times in the past this group has operated as it should, but not now.

Yes, all good points. Now that you mention it, I have read about that too. I
guess I was replying more generically, but you are right about this group
being the worst.

Frank,

Your various answers in this posting are almost as funny as your use of the
word 'Viola' (a stringed instrument slightly larger and lower in pitch than
a violin), instead of the correct word, 'voila' (from French, meaning
'there you are'). But what the hell, at least you got all the letters
correct. :>

Why don't spell checkers know what viola or voila I mean? Guess it's another
bug in Vista!

-Frank

Yeah... learning... I think I have a lot to learn. And I always will (I
hope!) This exchange got me to thinking...

The thing about newsgroups is that you often don't know anything about the
expertise of the person asking the question. This is in no way a judgment of
the person, simply that some are more knowledgeable in certain areas than
others. Like, some folks don't have time for any of this, they devote all
their time to their job (might even be an astronaut!) :)

Most posts (almost all from what I've seen) don't include enough information
to make a sure-fire diagnoses. Or, there may be 10 or more possible causes.
If you don't have time to list them all (even if you know them) you do your
best with the time/resources you have. So... when you answer a post, you
have one of two choices. You can continue to question the individual about
each and every little detail, or, you can supply the information that is
very often relevant in the hops that you hit the nail on the head. If not,
the person will reply back with more detail (hopefully), or tell you to go
to hell because they already knew that! If you reply with the info that is
the solution most of the time, you have the best chance of success. But
there is still a chance you're gonna miss the mark.

Such is life...

You might take a close look at the full headers of the original
posters message and then re-think what you said here.

Well that may be true in your case, but I'm using the same news server
to access this group as I am rec.pets.penguins and
alt.ann.coulter.die.die.die.......

Microsoft can't even serve it's own Newsgroups correctly.

Apparently you're receiving a mirrored feed of the server that I and
many others access directly, as either NEWS.MICROSOFT.COM or
MSNEWS.MICROSOFT.COM. Of course, there is also the WEB interface.

Actually, I think my statement probably still stands, mostely. After all, it
has become apparent that the MS servers are screwed up. The original
probably wasn't available.

It's not a "mirrored" feed. Microsoft only carries their own
newsgroups. Mine carries theirs and umpteen zillion others.

You can read MS newsgroups via Google Groups also.
