Who's played Half-Life 2/Doom 3 on a 9700 Pro?

How shall I put this. Hmmm.

Does anyone here know a friend of a friend whose brother's cousin has
played the leaked Half-Life 2 or Doom 3 alpha on a Radeon 9700 Pro?

What did this "cousin" think about the performance? It would help me
evaluate a possible purchase.

Many thanks for any hard info.

Didn't Tom's Hardware, or Valve do a test with Nvidia and ATI cards? I
heard that the 9800 series cards rocked with HL2, but Nvidia's cards sucked
because of their hardware implemenation of DX 9.

The Doom alpha is a little hard to judge. Looks great but smooth in spots
and choppy when a lot starts happening. I think it will play somewhat like
Splinter Cell, slow but steady. Remember it's been a_long_time since that
was leaked.

HL2 looks great and is very smooth. They've really worked out ways to get a
lot of detail on the screen without it being a chore for the video card. I
think it will play nicely on less than bleeding edge. Anyway, that's what
my cousin said.

My specs for comparison:
*Impression IM-21 Black Case w/Antec Truepower 431W PS*MSI K7N2
Delta-L*Athlon XP 2400 @ 200x11(1.70V)
Vantec Aeroflow*2x256 OCZ PC3200EL 2.0-2-3-7 (2.6v)*ATI 9700 Pro (Stock
speeds)*Seagate 120Gb*2x80GB WD "SE" riding a RocketRAID100*Lite-on
48/24/48/16 CD-RW/DVD combo*Sony 500a DVD +/-RW*Audigy*Klipsch Promedia
4.1's*Adaptec Media Center (PCI)*NEC MS97F-BK*XP Pro SP1*Logitech
Elite/MX700*BCC (Big Comfy Chair)

I get about 5K 3dMark03.

They run fine, provided you have a beefy CPU and comfortable amount of
RAM. I can only assume the final versions will perform equally as
well, or more so.

....says my cousin.

Actually I've been a self-imposed HL2 blackout (save the bink videos
that were released), but other people have no problem with the leaked
material it seems, and I'll admit to fiddling with the Doom 3 alpha
when it first appeared. It was more or less playable on a Ti4600 as
well, but the 9700p ran it quite smoothly.

No one has.

Half Life 2 runs like a dream, smooth as silk even at 1600x1200 with 6xAA
and 16xAF.

Doom 3 is not really possible to judge as that Alpha code is well over a
year old now, but it ran just fine most the time until a monster came
onscreen then performance became a bit random. I'm condifent the final code
won't be this way!

Incidentally I'm also using Athlon 2400+, 1 Gig of DDR PC2100 and an Audigy.

I find that somewhat hard to believe, I can't even play many older games at
those settings

Athlon@3400+

I run Splinter Cell and GTA Vice City at that resolution with AA and AF on
GTA.

Barton 2500+, nForce2, 1Gig 5-2-2-2, 9800 Pro.

ok, I believe you guys

i swear yall act like the hl2 leak does not exist.
let me tell you that it does ok?
i have played it on my 9600xt and it is smooth as can be
i ran it on an Athlon 2700+ with a GigaByte GA-7VA mobo with 1280 mb ddr
pc2700
i tested 4 cards on this system all with the latest omega
drivers for each card.
the cards were:
PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 128 meg version
VisionTek Xtasy 9600 256 meg version
ATI 9600XT 128 meg version
and a ATI 9200 n/p 128 meg version
all cards are on stock memory and clock speeds
out of all the cards the 9600XT performed the best out of all
and has anyone ever seen the dawn nude patched version on an ati?
very beautiful
ati rocks on graphics and stuff

I play the Doom demo on a 9700 Pro, but since the rest of my system is
not so fast, I cannot enjoy good frame rates AND good features.

How well the game runs is another, more subjective, story. SHould be ok
with that hardware though.

It runs very well, frame rates remain plenty high.
