Newbie...I have a 7 memeber simple workgroup LAN. I have 7
users who all have accounts on 7 machines....thats right
49 profiles. I'm having a hxxx of a time getting anyone
of them to maintain access to mappings. One of the
workstations is
acting as the "server". However, people log-in and off it
constantly....is this a mistake? Should I have just one
profile on this server? So that mappings aren't lost when
that user logs off. I obviously don't understand mappings,
etc. well enough.

My other thought is .......which machine is keeping the
browse list? There is one isn't there? Since this is a
workgroup?

All we want to do is access a single app (dentists office)
on one box through out the day.

Any and all recommendations for profile, share and any
other advice is greatly appreciated.

one machine generally assumes the role (after an election process) to become
the master browser. You can look at NBTSTAT and note the prefix to
determine who it is.

Scott,

this is not an answer to your actual question, only a remark on
the sidelines.

If you want to get rid of administering 49 profiles, the way out
is to make your server a domain controller and have the other
computers join that domain. Then you can even have the profiles
stored on the domain controller (roaming profiles), so each user
can work on each machine and get his profile loaded and later
updated on the server.

This is the basics of the Windows networking domain.

I agree. Can I make a domain controller out of Win XP Pro?

Scott,

unfortunately not. You have to buy one of the Windows servers
that have this functionality.

To all. Issue resolved......per another newsgroup and 6
hours or research. As usual......I just missed something.

I had forgotten to enable NETBIOS over TCPIP.....with my
static IP's. Comically .......that I was using to
troubleshoot. Now I'm going to go to an ICS setup....and
yes.....remap all my wkstns.

comments welcome.

Thanks for your efforts

Scott,

I wasn't aware of any problem other than too many profiles,
otherwise I would have recommended to have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm, which contains a hint at
NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
