On a XP workstation, when I try to open certain Word documents by using a
hyperlink, I get this message. "Whoops Unable to View this File (GP)"

Other Word documents open ok. Any ideas appreciated.
Is this a IE 6 browser issue or a Word 2002 issue?

This is not a standard Word/Windows error message. There must be some macro
involved.

Or in the document template or in a global template or add-in. Look for a
macro named something involving FollowHyperlink (I can't ascertain the exact
command).

The solution to this problem was to run Detect and Repair in Word.
I think it has something to do with this:
Opening documents for viewing can be done with Office 2000 or higher.
Opening documents for editing in the browser can only be performed when
people are using Office XP or higher. When you first hit the STS site with a
virgin machine, the system will download and activate the Office Web
Components according to the license on the particular machine. If an Office
XP license is found, the full version of the web components are activated.
If no qualifying Office XP application is found, the runtime version, with
limited functionality, is activated.
