whole system slow

I have windows xp home and m.soft explorer vers.6.0 and
have noticed all actions both on internet (which acts
like a dial up even tho it is h.s.cable)and program
loading, file retreiving are S-L-O-W. I am basically a
plug and play user, and wouldn't know where to begin to
find the cause. Need step-by-step detailed HELP. Can I
get here or is there a better resource?
