Whole host of problems

Where do I start? I have a custom built machine that I bought from my last
employer when he was downsizing. It has Windows XP Pro Version 2002, SP2 and
was built to run on a corporate network. It has worked fine in my home until
this past weekend. I had run Ad-Aware when I discovered that my Webroot
Spysweeper was out of date. I updated it, ran it and felt liked between the
two my machine was fairly clean of spyware. Every Thursday my Symantec
anti-virus runs.

I shut the machine down overnight and when I started it the next day I got
an error message that said the Webroot installation was corrupted and that
spysweeper would be restarted. I clicked OK and the machine finished booting
up. The net result was the following:

Drap & drop does not work
Right click, copy, paste does not work
Copying anything to the clipboard does not work
Installing anything that requires windows installer does not work
Making any changes to Services with the mouse does not work
Unable to load individual service properties from the menu or right click
Windows Help doesn not work
no sound even though Device Manager states that the card is functioning
properly
Troubleshooter does not work
IE does not start
Cannot use System Restore and the lis goes on
and the list goes on.

Individually, these problems are addressed by this public forum, but I'm
trying to find out if anyone else had this sort of problem and could offer a
solution. It appears to me that I have a major registry problem.

BTW, my Quicken and Netscape still work.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thank You

Too far gone...

Wipe the PC and re-install the OS from scratch.

Try "System Restore".

Have you tried a cold boot? That means Shut Down, actually remove power
from the PC (pull the plug if you have to), wait at least 60 seconds,
then plug it back in and start it up again.

I ask because you gave NO indication of what you may have tried so far.
What are some typical error messages?
What happens when you try some of those things?

David,

Yours is my option of last resort.

Thanks.

OP stated that he couldn't use System Restore.

To Lexicon: Why not? What specifically happens?

Pegasus & Daave,

I have tried "System Restore" several times with the following result:

"System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your
computer, and then run System Restore again."

Thanks

| Thanks.

Sure, I realize that.
However, based upon what you posted, I really doubt you will resolve the issues and you are
best off starting again.

It's your time and your decision.

Good Luck!

windmap,

The conditions exist on both user accounts and when I try to create a new
account I get the following:

Browse responds no locations can be found and the user domain could not be
found and does not exist.

I recently moved and cannot find where I packed my Windows XP CD.

Thanks
