Who Wants Some Free Bugs?

I downloaded the latest "critical" updates from MS, and suddenly IE started
crashing, during ebay searches. I got a funny message asking me to approve
the loading of a supposedly "trusted" site. After I went into MS's list of
trusted sites and removed that address, IE worked fine.

Thus it is clear that MS automatically installs bugs on our systems,
disguised as critical security patches. Sheesh!

So let me get your story straight...

- You downloaded the latest Microsoft Security patches. I also assume you
installed them - but I cannot tell when - you did not say. Did you start
installing them and then continued to use IE v#.# as you installed them or
did you install them and reboot and then start using IE v#.# or...?

- You used Internet Explorer. What version of IE? What OS version - are
you using anyway? Home, Pro, MCE, Tablet, x64?

- It was working "okay" (I am assuming - as you said "it suddenly started
crashing) until you did some eBay searches. What eBay searches? What were
the messages you got when it crashed? What is in your event log?

- You received some sort of message (either after or during the crashing and
such of IE v#.# while doing searches on eBay) about approving a "trusted"
site... What site was it trying to get you to approve? What was the wording
of the message? Anything in your event log about it?

- You went in and removed the trusted site that you were told about (what
was the site again?) and everything started working okay again...

See - I cannot come to the same conclusion as you with Microsoft installing
a 'bug' - as you have given a story that sounds like this:

My cousin has a friend who's uncle logged into this web page on his computer
and suddenly things starting looking weird. He got this one message and he
deiced he would remove the site that message was referring to from his
trusted sites list and - pow - everything was okay from then on...

In short...

Your story is missing *some details* that might help others look into it and
determine if something actually got added by some Microsoft update or not.
Also the deatils would help other avoid the issue you had.

What site?

Could it not be the result of malware?

Who says?

No trouble here - XP Pro SP2 fully patched, IE7 fully patched

Wow. The only perfect programmer in existence has spoken. Maybe we
should get some stone tablets to engrave his godly commandments.

Nuts! I had no more trouble than usual, just the screwing up of
restore settings that I have gotten used to.

"MS automatically installs bugs"? I doubt if you were at a MS website.
You were probably at some malware/spyware site surfing when you
got the message and you "fell" for it.....period.

Of course I installed them, Miss Literal.

Pro, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227.2254IC
- It was working "okay" (I am assuming - as you said "it suddenly
started crashing) until you did some eBay searches. What eBay
searches? What were the messages you got when it crashed?

Reread the original post.
What is in your event log?

Type: Error Event ID: 1000

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.3157, fault address 0x0006b258.

But when I click to go the MS Help And Support Center, for more
information, the page can't be found.

I am not sure why, given your statements, you wrote this "Thus it is
clear that MS automatically installs bugs on our systems, disguised as
critical security patches." There are spoof Microsoft emails etc
circulating from time to time but I am not sure how anyone can hold
Microsoft responsible for these.

It would seem that Internet Explorer and / or your Firewall alerted you
to a risk and you responded to the warning as intended. I am not sure
how Norton AV would be involved as it does not become involved with site
designations, which is an Internet Explorer feature.

This was one of MS's routine patches, installed through their standard
patch utility, not an email. Also, the creshes didn't happen during the
install, but days later, during an ebay search. As to responding to the
warning as intended, I would hardly think that removing yahoo from my
trusted sites list was intended, nor should it have been required, nor
should a security warning crash IE.
