Who Is Right about this one?

A friend of mine bought a Dell system some time ago. It came with
RDRAM (two sticks of 256). The Salesperson told him since it had a FSB
of 800, with 2 sticks it now becomes a FSB of 1600. I say NO, it's
still 800. He's still sure the Dell guy was right. So who's right? Me
or the Dell Guy???

Anyone wanna post an answer so I can win an argument? PLEASE!
 
It's 800.200x4 if it's a quad pumped system. Salesguy is a typical retail idiot
or he overstated on purpose.

You are 16bit is dual channel in pairs but is 2x400MHz which gives the
800MHz bus, 32 bit RD ram does not need to be fitted in pairs, the latest
dual channel boards using DDR2 PC5300 are way faster.

Sorry got that wrong looking at the wrong page in my book, 16 bit in pairs
runs at 2x400MHz which is 800MHz is PC800 32 bit can run in singles, PC1066
is 2x533MHz which is 1066MHz, not really true though as one is read the
other is write.

AFAIK, the dell guy is right *if* it the board supports dual channel memory
access. Basically it can read from 2 memory chips at once, effectively
doubling it's speed. I'm not sure why they call it FSB800 when it actually
runs at 400MHz (or is it 200 double data rate?), but I think comparing it to
being effectively FSB1600 is accurate. BTW, are you sure it is RDRam and DDR
Ram?

Not sure if it's Dual Channel Memory. All I know is it's a P4 2.4 (he
bought it almost a year ago) and I'm very sure it's RDRAM- I had to read
his manual cuz he couldn't make sense of it. And dont ask about the
internet- the kid has NO clue how to even type in a web address. Sad,
aint it?

YEP! And we're talking about a kid who still doesnt know how to type a
web address let alone use the computer. Kinda like buying a ferrari but
not being able to drive a stick-shift. :)

I'm not sure if motherboards that had RDRam also supported Dual Channel but
it is possible. In a way you were wrong about this because in some boards
the memory speed will be increased by using 2x256MB modules as opposed to a
single 512, you were under the impression that this didn't happen in any
board. The only question is whether this applies to his mobo or not.
And dont ask about the
internet- the kid has NO clue how to even type in a web address. Sad,

There is a very good chance you'll have to tell him that he was right and
you were wrong.

Well I'll have him check the manual & see if it's Dual Channel. If it
is He wins. Besides, I dont have much experience with RDram. Too
expensive for most people around here at least for those who know what
RAM is. Most of them still run their Pentium 2's & wonder why the newer
games barely or dont run at all.

But yea, if he's right I'll tell him.

that P4 has a 400 FSB (100MHz clock quad pumped)
RDram runs also @ 100MHz clock quad pumped x 2 sticks to have 32.bit
transfers = 800 datarate ..
