I couldnt connect my digital camera to my PC running Win98SE for a few
days because the USB was disabled in the BIOS!

Isnt Win95 and everything afterwards supposed to be plug-n-play?
Why do I have to mess around with the BIOS and IRQ and install drivers
for this and that at all?

BIOS? IRQ?

I bet none of this nonesense happens on iMacs.
It sure never did on the Commodore machines(Amiga included).

Connecting a 2nd harddrive is a hassle as well. Master-Slave, BIOS
settings, jumpers.
JUMPERS FOR GOODNESS SAKES!!!

DMA? ISA & PCI bus?... Yes, someone get me a bus and get me out of
this madness!

SIMM, DIMM, EDO... idiots!

and who is this SCSI person and why does he hate IDE?

FAT. Huh? why the hell does a file which is 9k take up 32kb on the hdd?

There is something mysterious, spooky, and all together kooky called
the REGISTRY.

CMOS? Is that the ape god from 'The Planet of the Apes'?
Might as well be, as it seems to be worshipped by those possessing the
CompTia paper cert known as the A+; the only ones getting an A+ from me
are those schools which rip off students by pushing paper certs, which
these days might as well be used as toilet paper.

Any I couldn't get into my house when the door was locked the other day -
very annoying. I had to make a special trip with my hand all the way into my
pocket to get a metal device out, which I had to put it into a 1cm slot in
the door and turn it 360 degrees anti-clockwise before I could get into the
house. Whoever invented that should be shot - what a nuisance.
 
GT i feel ya man, mine is on this damn thing that hooks onto my jeans and I
too have to turn 360 degrees counterclockwise. I ever me the guy invented
that hes gettin an ass whuppin

Fully half the population has an IQ under 100.

You can easily discover who they are. Just ask them who they voted for
in the last two presidential elections and if they say "Gore" and
"Kerry" you know they have to have an IQ under 100.

Because the system either pre-dates the USB devices, it
shipped without anything USB, or because you're changing
things, the hardware. If you don't want to do it, hire
someone to do it. The optimal arrangement for a PC is not
to have everything plus the kitcken sink active, only those
devices used. Granted it would be more convenient for USB
to be enabled, so if you want to blame the motherboard
manufacturer or system integrator, go ahead.

Actually most drives now ship jumpered to cable select.
Nobody ever said systems were supposed to be tailored
primarily towards ease of setup for someone who doesn't want
to ever set anything up.

Flexibility in configuration is a virtue... just because it
didn't benefit you at that very moment, in the long run it
is the whole point of a PC rather than a specfic purpose
appliance of some sort.

As someone who, until 18 months ago, was using an Amiga exclusivel
(albeit a rather souped up and customised one) I 've got to say tha
getting hardware working reliably on it was a black art. I ha
daughter boards and riser cards populated with a CPU, RAM, Graphic
card, soundcard, I/O card, IDE card etc. etc. - not to mention
hacked motherboard to accomodate the reset switch on the tower etc
etc. etc. I didn't dare even fasten the screws on the side of th
tower because I knew I was going to have to get back inside soo
enough to fix something

And then there was sourcing the libraries, and making sure that the
were loaded in the correct order - even to the point of having t
write my own initialisation prog for the soundcard because the on
supplied brought my system to it's knees

As much as I loved AmigaOS (far more elegant and responsive than an
version of Windows) I have to say that the propriety PC platform i
much easier to set up, and far more reliable
