I hate reading through warranty text, but from what I've read it looks like
Lexmark & Epson require the end user to pay for any incurred shipping
charges to obtain repair for the units. HP will pay for shipping, but
you're out of a printers until HP decides if they'll fix it or send you a
new one. Canon also pays for shipping both ways, but will ship a new unit
out overnight then you can use the same box to ship it back.

Anyone see any errors in my understanding of these company's warrantys in
regards to obtaining service (other than phone support)? Or have any
experience obtaining warranty service?

Warranties can vary from country to country.

I'm in the UK and my Epson 2100 came with an on-site warranty. I don't
know whether that would include bringing the printer back should it need
to be taken away for repair or not.

everytime i've had a faulty epson within the warranty period they simply
replaced it with a refurb and threw in the cartridges. the postman didn't
want to know what was wrong or really know if they repaired the old one or
threw it. I assume it was a refurb i can't imagine them replacing with a
fresh one with the price of sending a real person to deliver to your door.
the only caveat was that it had to be the address you registered at so i had
to stay at home.

Don't knock refurbs. They are much better than a "new" replacement
because they have been properly serviced and definitely work. :)

I'#d much rather have a proper refurb than a "new" replacement.
